Installation technique matters as much as species, and matters more over caliche. We probe first, because a planting hole dug into hardpan is a bucket, and a bucket in clay loam drowns roots in a place nobody would think to check. Where we hit it, we punch through the bottom or widen substantially so roots have a lateral escape. Then the fundamentals done properly: hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the ball, root flare set at or slightly above finished grade, circling roots scored on container stock, backfill with the native soil we removed rather than a pit of imported compost, and three inches of mulch pulled back off the trunk. Planting too deep is the leading cause of slow tree death and it happens constantly. Staking is more often necessary here than elsewhere because of the wind, so we use broad flexible ties and, crucially, come back to remove them before they girdle the trunk.
